A friend of mine (from elementary school!) travels around the world with Disney on Ice. She and I are still in touch, and today I got a message from her that said she wishes I blogged more often, because she likes to read my posts. So this post is kind of for Jenny....and for my mom, because she likes to read my posts too. :)
It has been a really great week so far. Rich, like last week. Fun and adventurous, like usual. Never boring, always busy and full. That's the way I like it.
I got to have more meaningful conversations with my friend from church I met a few weeks ago. I asked, "Do you want to meet at Starbucks to hang for a bit?" and the relpy was, "I actually gave up going to Starbucks, can we go somewhere else?" We hit up McCafe at the local McDonalds instead. What matters is the company, right? I am thankful for that opportunity, though, because the McDonalds we met at happens to be in a diverse area of town...so upon choosing a table and sitting down to talk, a gentleman came to chat with us...in Spanish. I was at the counter when the guy came to talk to my friend at our table, so when I got to the table, I just started talking to him in Spanish too. It was a good experience. Just one more reason I am thankful God allowed me to stay living in SoCal.
Monday morning gave me a renewed perspective - one of my students shared that a friend of hers had been killed the night before. It brought back memories of a similar experience in my own life. In 2 Corinthians chapter 1 it says, "Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received." I think it is pretty awesome that God is so involved in our lives that when we choose to look for Him, opportunities to serve and bless others are right in front of our eyes. Many prayers go out to my student who is confused and grieving.
One of my best pals and I hit up a favorite place on Monday night - Yogurtland. Red Velvet frozen yogurt? YES please. :) You probably had to be there, but Megan and I talked and laughed on end that evening about the silly ways that "people are different" (a quote from me a few years ago...still works!) I am literally laughing out loud right now thinking back to that night at Yogurtland...I hope everyone has a friend (or friends) in their lives that they can share stories and laugh with, because I have found that it is good for the soul.
If you know me at all, you know that I am not the biggest fan of baseball games. However I am a BIG fan of hanging out with people, so if people are hanging out and it happens to be at a baseball game, I am in. Last night our high school youth group and some other cool leaders from our church went to a minor league baseball game, and it was FUN. Before the game, I thought I'd be cool and buy some sunflower seeds, because that is what true baseball fans would do. :) I had a blast at the game, despite the sunflower seeds that were thrown AT me by my lovely youth group children....Awhile back, I talked to one of my pastors who leads youth group, telling him I wasn't sure I could commit to being a leader. I felt inadequate, exhausted, and a whole other mix of emotions. My pastor said something to the effect of, "Allison, often times you will grow in spirituality AS you do mininistry." How true. Last night, and every Tuesday night is proof of how God desires to teach me as much as the kiddos.
Tonight I am chilling at home with a cup of hot peppermint tea. (am I 80? Sheesh!)I have been losing my voice more often these days, so this is all I can do. :) Maybe a few episodes of Friends while I grade some papers...
There ya have it, Jenny (and mom). Hope you enjoyed the read.
