This is a picture of hope.

The other day one of my students asked me to write a recommendation letter for him. As a semi-new high school teacher, this is really my first opportunity to do this for a student. Of course, he asked me to write it for him just yesterday, and needs it by tomorrow. Classic. Thankfully stress often helps me get things accomplished FAST, so I busted out a letter for him tonight. (and finished just in time to get ready for my Office party!) Anyway, I wanted to post the letter on my blog - not to show off my terrific writing skills - because I have much room to improve, but more to give you a glimpse of the kind of kid I get to teach and serve alongside every day. With only about 6 weeks of school left, I am realizing how precious these days really are - that I will never get to teach these students in this capactiy ever again. In that light - read on to be encouraged that there truly is HOPE for our future in the very kids I get to help educate each and every day. I took out the name of the kid for privacy reasons, but many of these things could be said of my whole Jackson team and many other students at my school.

To Whom It May Concern:
It has been my pleasure to have ** as a student in Spanish class this year, as well as serve alongside him on a mission trip to Jackson, Mississippi this spring. ** is a joy to have in class. He is a deep thinker and has a positive attitude. While on our mission trip to Mississippi, ** and I served the people of Jackson by restoring a home to be used as low-income housing for a couple in need. In addition, I discovered the deep love and passion ** has for people. ** has a heart for people of all racial and socio-economic levels. Furthermore, ** has an authentic Christian faith and strong leadership qualities.

** and I have had the opportunity to speak about his passions for all peoples throughout the course of this school year. He has shared with me his heart for the homeless, and how he feels he has much to gain from building relationships with people no matter what their socio-economic status. While in Jackson, ** had the unique opportunity to listen to leaders such as John Perkins and Lowell Noble; two leaders in the movement for social justice. I believe that ** learned and absorbed all he could from these two exceptional leaders, and was able to articulate his responses well. Through group discussion, I learned that **'s Christian faith is unique and anything but casual.

** has grown up in a Christian home and because of this, has learned what it means to be a critical thinker and follower of Christ. Studying the Word of God and applying its principles is important to **. While in Jackson, ** was eager to accept the responsibilities required of him by other leaders, and helped document our trip filming different aspects of our service. Living a life of service and love for all people is a call from God that **has eagerly accepted for his life.

** has exhibited strong leadership qualities in a variety of ways. Musical ability is just one of the many gifts that ** possesses as a leader. He has led worship at a number of different churches and youth retreats. In addition, ** is involved in the chapel leadership class at ** ** High School where he has helped plan chapel services, shared scripture, and played in the worship band. In Jackson it was evident that **’s peers look up to him as a leader and Christian role model.

I have no doubt that ** will continue to grow in his love for all peoples, in his Christian faith, and in his leadership abilities. ** is a passionate follower and servant of Christ who strives to follow his calling in all situations. It is with highest recommendation that I conclude this letter for ** who will no doubt make a significant difference in the lives of many.
